Khamlia town is located on the eastern edge of Morocco’s Sahara Desert, near the Erg Chebbi sand dunes. It is located 7 kilometers from Merzouga. Gnawa were nomads before settling in Khamlia last century. The community today comprises 390 Gnawa inhabitants.
The Gnawa tribe originates in Sub-Saharan African countries such as Sudan, Mali, and Niger. They were forced to flee their homeland for millennia as a result of the global slave trade. They discovered awareness through chanting and banging.
